Over the weekend my friend Larry and I went to see Red, White, and Broadway. It was a great show and a different way to celebrate the 4th of July. If I’m being totally honest, leaving the house for something other than doctor’s appointments or dialysis is a real treat, any event is a thrill to me at this point.
As I was watching the show I found myself getting emotional. It happens fairly regularly, but I was caught off guard at the show. Who cries while watching people tap dance and sing Broadway songs. Apparently, I do! I wasn’t a sobbing mess by any means but I cried, a couple of different times. And it all came back to one thing.
I love seeing people do what they love!
It was obvious while watching several of the performers that they were living their dream. They were totally in their element and enjoying themselves. This then makes me think of all the people who are wasting time, and not following their passion. Life is just too short to waste time. Too often we come up with excuses to put off doing the things we love. We make it seem noble, we are busy working, we are taking care of our kids, we are being responsible. But the reality is, we are just selling ourselves short and putting our desires last.
At the end of our lives, it won’t matter how much we worked. No one gives a shit or will ever ask about your “dream job” when they visit you on your deathbed. They will wonder if you lived the life you wanted. You will be asking yourself the same question, did I live the life I wanted?
I can easily say yes. Which also makes me a little emotional. I’ve filled my life with the things I love. My children, my family, my writing, and plenty of laughter. Can you say the same thing? Would you say yes, you have lived the life you wanted? If you can’t say yes, stop wasting time. Do what you love today!
We can’t get time back, but we can plan to spend our time more wisely in the future. Say yes to trying something new, use your vacation time, leave work on time every day, take a trip, be in the show, make the artwork, write the book, or pursue whatever else fills your life with joy. You are worth having the life you dream of.
